Please click the link below to download a 58-page preservation assessment funded by a grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division and the Georgia Department of Economic Development to the Kirkwood Neighbors’ Organization (KNO). The work was conducted by Chicora Foundation on December 13-14, 2010 and involved a one-day on-site review and meeting with members of the KNO involved in the preservation of Clay Cemetery.

  1. UPDATE: New & Ongoing Projects at Clay Cemetery 11/2014

A project recently started is the visible numbering of cast cement grave markers installed in 2013 to memorialize unmarked graves located to that point (many confirmed by this summer’s GPR survey). The numbers correspond to those used for identified and suspect unmarked graves during the original terrain survey. The markers are styled comparably to similarly sized historic markers and were approved by descendants. In the near future we will be installing another 25 of these, so look out for the opportunity to volunteer for Kirkwood’s premier local historical site!

We’ll also be having one or two leaf raking days in the near future … given the heavy leaf production (see the pics) from our old growth hardwoods it’s important that we do this to both preserve and uncover significant elements of Clay Cemetery long hidden by decades of abandonment. As always feel free to contact Earl at 404-378-9599 or earline_AA@yahoo.com for any questions.
